This week in Owls we read the story 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley'. It told us about the adventures of a plastic bag who got mistaken for a jellyfish in the ocean! We learnt that it can be harmful to animals to not put rubbish in the right places, so we became 'Wildlife Protectors' - creating posters to tell people to put their rubbish in the bin! We learnt that it is our job to look after our environment and do our bit to be responsible. We thought about what else we could do to keep animals and the planet safe. The children spoke about recycling and what this meant. 

In maths, we used weighing scales to compare and explore weight. We held items in our hands first and thought about whether they felt heavy, light or the same, then used the scales to discover if we had been correct in our predictions or not! The children were challenged to find items from around the classroom and balance the scales, knowing this meant that the weight was 'the same on both sides'. 

We spent some time this week practising our listening and talking about how our behaviour affects others. We listed what made a good friend and how we can help others if they are upset. The children then made friendship bracelets to gift to their friends by threading beads onto pipe cleaners and twisting them to secure them in place. 

We continued our learning about Chinese New Year by learning the different traditions during the celebration. We learnt that people might clean their houses and decorate to prepare, share gifts of money in red envelopes, wear red as it symbolises good luck, and share a meal together with family. We spoke about other celebrations where we have similar traditions and compared what was the same and what was different. 

Congratulations to our Star of the Week... Elodie! Elodie demonstrated this week how to be a kind and caring friend, not only to her close friends but to all members of the class. Well done Elodie!
