Spring 1 Week 5
What an exciting week the Owls have had this week!
The highlight of the week was our visit by our local police. The children had a talk about how the police keep us safe and what to do in different situations (for example, if we were lost at the shops), before getting to see the police car lights and hear the sirens! We even got to try on some police hats and jackets. Miss Slaney even got arrested by two of the children! The children thought of questions we could ask before meeting the police officers. They thought of some really sensible questions, such as "Where is the police station?", "How do you keep us safe?" and "Do you have a police dog?".
In maths, we continued our learning about weight and measuring. We chose different items from around the classroom and found out how much they weighed. We used balancing scales with cubes as our unit of measurement, adding cubes to the scales until they were balanced. The children were able to use the correct language when talking, discussing which items were the 'heaviest', 'lightest' or 'the same' in weight.
We read the book 'Clothesline clues to jobs people do', using our detective skills to determine what jobs the clothes and props were relating to. We spoke about firefighters, carpenters, chefs, postal delivery officers, bin collectors, vets and dentists. The children drew pictures of a job that helps people and wrote a sentence to match. We had some amazing jobs!
In art, this week we listened to music and thought about what the different instruments and sounds might look like. We talked about how loud instruments such as drums might be bold colours like red or black, whilst calmer and quieter sounds might be paler colours in soft lines. The children worked in collaboration, moving around different stations where they used a variety of tools and equipment to make patterns on their paper. The children loved experimenting!
Well done to this week's Star of the Week... Ffion! Our Christian value this term is 'perseverance' and Ffion demonstrated tremendous perseverance in her writing this week! She wrote a beautiful, long sentence about wanting to be a pilot, accompanied by a fabulous drawing of her "and Daddy" and a plane. Well done Ffion!
Just a few reminders for the final week of term!
- Please remember that on PE days the children need to be in full PE kit. This means no tights. We remove shoes and socks for yoga on Tuesdays and tights can mean the children find the mats a bit slippy.
- Please continue reading with your children as often as you can. (This week's raffle tickets are sat on Miss Slaney's desk ready to go home on Monday! Next week will be the last week before our next reading prize draw, so do make sure any reading is recorded in their reading records).
Have a wonderful weekend.
Miss Slaney :)
