Spring 1 Week 6
And with that Spring term 1 comes to a close! What a busy week Owls class have had. We were lucky to be visited by lots of different people who help us, created obserational drawings, paintings and collages of daffodils, had a paper airplane race and thought about what jobs we might like when we grow up.
In our writing this week, we build upon last week's writing of 'I am a...' and used the longer sentence starter 'I will be...' to write about what jobs we might like when we grow up. The Owls absolutley loved dressing up as the different job roles, including farmers, doctors, vets, teachers, artists, scientists, police officers and plumbers. They extended their sentences by adding something they might need to help them, using the sentence stem 'I will need a...'.
We had such a wonerful variety of visitors this week! On Wednesday, we met Beverly the Vet and Taz the dog. The children listened to Beverly talk about what a vet does, looked at x-rays of different animals and tried to work out what animal it might be, looked at different tools a vet might have and even got to listen to Taz's heartbeat using a stethoscope!
On Thursday we met a zookeeper, an airplane engineer, a British Army teacher/contractor, a science teacher, a midwife and our very own school cleaner! The children moved around the different visitors in groups, listening to them talk about their jobs and asking different questions. Thank you so much to all of our visitors for giving up your time and coming to talk to the children, they had a wonderful time and talked of nothing else all day!
Our classroom has smelt beautiful this week, full of the scent of spring! This has come from the daffodils that we observed chaging and opening as the week went on. We began by using pencils and crayons to draw how they looked, then each day checked back and made a new drawing noting the changes! We experimented with watercolour paints and at the end of the week used colourful card and paper to create collages of the daffodils.
In maths this week we looked at capacity. We filled containers of different sizes to find out how much they could hold, and then ordered them both by capacity and then by full to empty. The children quickly grapsed the different vocabulary needed when looking at capacity.
Well done to our Star of the Week... Penelope! Penelope has worked really hard this week in all of her learning and was especially kind, polite and respectful to our different visitors. Well done Penelope!
We finished the week by working in teams to make and decorate paper airplanes and have a paper airplane race! The airplanes flew amazingly and the children loved testing out their folds and throwing techniques to make them fly better/further.
I wish you all a wonderful half term. Please do remember to keep reading, and have a lovely break! When we come back we will be starting our new topic of 'Around the World' (Knowledge Organiser and key details to be uploaded shortly). Many thanks and see you next term!
